To ensure the composition of the classes reflects the character of the school. In order to achieve this, the placement of pupils into classes requires careful consideration in an endeavour to ensure all children are provided with the best opportunity to have their intellectual, social and emotional development catered for.

PURPOSE
to ensure:
1. That all classes, apart from the bilingual class and certificating teachers class, whenever possible will be:
   a) straight Form 1 and 2 classes
   b) have a school balance of ethnic groups
   c) a range of academic abilities
   d) a balance of students from the school that contribute to the intermediate
   e) equal class sizes
    f) gender balance

2. The needs of the students will be taken into account when placing them in a class and allocating a teacher to the class.

3. Parents have the choice of having their children considered for entry into the bilingual class - in line with the bilingual policy.

4. Part time mainstreaming of students enrolled in the Tokoroa North School Unit will take place after consultation between the Deputy Principal of Tokoroa Intermediate, the Principal of Tokoroa North School, M.O.E. –G.S.E. and parent/s of the student, and the following criteria has been met.
   a) a teacher is willing to have student in his/her class
   b) the reason for the student’s mainstreaming is agreeable to Tokoroa Intermediate School
   c) the hours of mainstreaming are agreeable to Tokoroa Intermediate School
   d) resources are provided when necessary to support the student etc (teacher aides)

GUIDELINES

1. The B.O.T. recognises that placement of pupils into class groups is the professional task of the Principal and staff and will be bound by this decision.

2. The Deputy Principal, in consultation with the Principal, will place the Year 7 students in classes. Information from the contributing schools enrolment forms and parent information will be used to place children in classes so as to cater for their needs, whenever possible.

3. Parents will be consulted regarding promotion, the retention of students in the same class level or moving students one from class or level to another.

4. Parents will have the opportunity to make requests based on the educational needs of the children prior to the formation of the classes in November.

5. Children will only be placed in the bilingual class on request from parents/caregivers. Guidelines as to the criteria used in selecting children for the bilingual class is outlined in detail in the bilingual policy and will not necessarily follow gender, school and ethnic balance.

6. Whenever possible, parents will be informed in December of their child's class and teacher for the following year. At times changes are necessary. When these are made parents and students will be made aware of these. As well changes to Education Outside the Classroom dates will be passed onto parents as soon as possible.

7. Careful consideration needs to be given to the size and composition of a certificating teachers class, keeping in mind that they are still in their training.
