PURPOSE
1. To provide students with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to
enjoy a healthy lifestyle and contribute actively to the wellbeing of
others and wellbeing of their communities.
2. To encourage students to take increasing responsibility for their own
health.
3. To acquire and practice a wide range of motor skills that can be
transferred to a variety of sports, recreational activities and everyday
life situations.
4. To provide a range of activities that students can actively participate
in and gain exercise through.
5. To develop and improve students inter-personal relationships with
others.
6. To provide the opportunity for students to gain enjoyment, fun, success
and self esteem.
GUIDELINES
1. Physical Education is one aspect of the Health and Physical Education
Curriculum with shared philosophy and achievement objectives with Health
and Food Technology. There is an inter-relationship between the three
areas (Hauora)
2. The Physical Education, Sport, Health and Food Technology school
programme will cover the 4 strands from the curriculum document.
3. Planning some units of Physical Education will include integration with
sport, Health and Food Technology (Hauora). Examples are included in the
Health and Physical Education Implementation Plan.
4. Sport which is a component of the Health and Physical Education
Curriculum is covered separately n the Sports Policy
5. All students to be timetabled to have 1 hour 30 minutes of phys-ed per
week when a school sports programme is in place and 2 hours 15 minutes per
week when it is not in place.
6. Syndicates will have the flexibility to plan and organise programmes to
suit the ability and needs of the students, skills and expertise of staff,
and maximise use of resources and facilities.
7. A school Phys-ed Timetable will be in place with classes timetabled to
have first use of gear and facilities.
8. Whenever possible the hall will be available for timetabled phys-ed
lessons when wet or cold.
