Rationale

To develop a stimulating environment and level of competency in mathematics to enable the students to become confident and successful members of the community.


Purpose

1. To help students development positive attitudes, a sense of personal achievement, and a continuing and creative interest in mathematics, and to help them fulfil their individual potential.

2. To promote students' ability to reason logically, coherently and concisely , and to express their ideas - in symbols and diagrams - with accuracy and precision.

3. To help students achieve the mathematical competence needed in a society which is becoming increasingly technologically orientated.

4. To continue to develop in students the skills, concepts, understanding and attitudes which will enable them to cope confidently with the mathematics of everyday life.

5. To prepare students for mathematical requirements of their future vocations and for any later studies in mathematics and other subjects.


Guidelines

1. Students will work at a level suitable to their academic maturity and competency. Cross grouping may occur to enable teaching to be directed at a more specific level.

2. Extension Group
   a) During the first term children with outstanding ability will be identified through the classroom programme and  withdrawn from Year 7 and Year 8 levels for extension work.
   b) The extension mathematics group will operate during Terms 2 and 3 and a part of Terms 1 and 4 to fit in with the organisation of the school.
   c) Extension group children will be required to sit the NSW Primary School Maths Competition.  Children from outside this group may also opt to sit this test.

3. There will be school-wide tests in computation three times per year.  The teaching of computation skills and their maintenance will form part of the on going mathematics programme.
