Dear Parents / Caregivers

Congratulations to the Jump Jam girls, they competed in the New Zealand finals in Auckland last Saturday.  They made the grand final.  They were the only Waikato/Bay of Plenty team to achieve this.  Well done girls and a BIG thank you to Mrs Smith and the parents who assisted.

Our athletics team performed very creditably at Waikato Intermediate Schools Competition yesterday.  Placings and achievements are noted in a separate report, however, our congratulations must go to all members of our team who attended, gave it their best effort and enjoyed the experience.  My thanks to Mrs Puke and Mr Wild for their contribution and to Mr Hopkinson for his overall part in the athletics programme.

Today we have our 2007 Year 7 students visiting the school for their Orientation Day.  A sure sign that 2006 school year is closing in fast.  Please remember that this is an extremely busy time of the year, there are many activities happening in syndicates and/or classes.  Watch out for newsletters from teachers about these events and return any permission slips promptly.

Uniforms - to be donated or sold on behalf of.

In January we have a second hand uniform sale, which is always very popular.  For Year 8 students who are leaving at the end of this year and have no brothers or sisters coming on to Intermediate, school uniforms can be donated to the school or we will sell them on ‘behalf of parents’.  We are willing to take winter and spare uniforms now.  They must be clean (washed).  Year 8 students who are willing to donate or have their uniforms ‘sold on behalf’ can come to school on the last day of the year in mufti.  For inquiries please contact the office.

Jump Jam

Last Saturday the eight girls in the Jump Jam aerobics squad went to the Nationals in Auckland. It was a long day starting at 7:00 a.m. with hair and make up.  They arrived at the stadium at 10:30 and were there till 7:30 that night.  There were twenty nine Year 7/8 teams who had made it to
the Nationals out of the hundreds who tried.  The girls made it into the top ten finals going in at 8th position and had to take the stage again.  Once it was all over the girls were given their final position which was 6th in New Zealand.  We would like to thank Mrs Newton and Rosealie for coming on the trip and helping us.

End of Year Socials

The end of year socials will be held next Monday, 11th December for Year 7 and Tuesday, 12th December for Year 8 in the Tokoroa Intermediate School hall.  As for all socials it is on an invitation only basis.  It is essential that overdue library books are returned, atlases and dictionaries accounted for and any outstanding money (except school fees) paid.  The Year 7 social will be from 7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. and the cost will be $3.00.  The Year 8 social will have a Hollywood theme and will be from 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. and will cost $8.00 (includes supper).  A reminder that hair needs to be of their natural colour, an acceptable standard of dress and behaviour is expected.  As we are concerned about student safety, your child must be collected from the hall after the Social.

Several important reminders:

  • Invitation permission slips must be presented at the door, signed by a parent / guardian.
  • Pupils will need to be brought to and collected from the hall. This is a condition of attending the Social. Students are not to arrange to meet parents in Elizabeth Drive, Billah Street or the Matarawa Bus Bay. This is for safety reasons.
  • The Elizabeth Drive gate will be open before the Social and again at the end of the Social.
  • A tidy standard of dress is required.
  • No hats, bandanas or beanies.
  • Bags are discouraged.
  • The Tuck Shop is open but large amounts of money are not to be brought.
  • Security will be in attendance to support the staff.
  • No pupils may leave the hall until dismissed by the teacher-in-charge.

Futureintech
The Futureintech is a Government funded initiative of the Institution of Professional Engineers in New Zealand (IPENZ). The Futureintech project aims to lift the profile careers in Science, Engineering and Technology and to support the school curriculum areas of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education with industry links.

Earlier this year, Tokoroa Intermediate School became a case study school for Futureintech and selected classrooms were surveyed for baseline data. Thank you to the students and parents who completed questionnaires during this survey.

Along with this newsletter you will receive a booklet for parents and caregivers about careers in Science, Engineering and Technology. Futureintech would appreciate your perusal of the booklet and your response to the questionnaire included. Please send completed questionnaires to the researcher in the pre-paid envelope enclosed in the booklet. Booklets are also available in Te Reo Maori and may be obtained from the school office along with an Information Sheet if needed.
