Dear Parents / Caregivers
You will be aware that the Ministry of Education has
launched a draft curriculum document this week. Parents who wish to read the
document in full (38 pages) will find it on the Ministry website –
www.tki.org.nz/r/nzcurriculum
There has been comment in the media regarding the introduction of values
into the curriculum.
This simply reads New Zealand students are encouraged
to value:
- Excellence, by aiming high and by persevering in the face of difficulty.
- Innovation, enquiry and curiosity, by thinking creatively, critically and
reflectively.
- Diversity, as found in our different cultures, languages and heritages.
- Respect, for themselves, for others and for human rights.
- Equity, which means fairness and social justice.
- Community and participation, for the common good.
- Care for the environment, (the earth and its inter-related eco systems.
- Integrity, which involves being honest, responsible and accountable and
acting ethically.
These values stated in the document are very timely for us as a school as we
explore our beliefs and values around education. The values stated are
certainly not new and while the words may be different the ideas are similar
to the school values stated in our Charter. Hopefully as space in our
newsletter dictates we will feed you small major facets of this document to
assist the community’s understanding of the document. I would be happy to
hear your views on what is in the newsletter or indeed in the whole
document.

Waikato Inter-Intermediate Schools Rugby
Forty five boys and two teachers travelled to Bedford Park, Matamata on
Tuesday, 1 August to contest the annual rugby competition. The Over 55kg
came home with a record of two losses and two wins and the Under 55kg lost
four and drew one game. Obviously this was not our best result in recent
years but those who participated enjoyed their day of rugby. Many thanks to
the supporters who travelled to support the boys on the day.

How To Keep Your Kids In Sport
Because sport is a natural, healthy fun way for your
children to spend their time, Sport Waikato encourages parents to be
proactive in encouraging children to get started in sport and to stay with
it. There are many reasons children and young people drop out of sport.
Here
are just a few.
- “No one takes any interest in me”. Demonstrate your interest by talking to
them about sport, go and watch them participate and be positive on the
sidelines.
- “People always tell me what to do”. Praise children and make a fuss of the
good things they do. Any suggestions for improving their game should be left
until a later time.
- “My parents embarrass me”. Be a spectator your child can be proud of. Go
to the games, cheer for the team (not too loudly) and offer lots of positive
support.
- “It’s too hard”. If sport becomes too much, encourage them to ease back
for a while rather than stopping altogether.
- “There’s no time for anything else”. Make sure sport does not take over
your child’s life. Ensure they have time for school work and other leisure
time activities. Help them plan to manage their time.
- “My team never wins”. Teach your children that winning is only one way
they can achieve in sport. They can achieve through demonstrating
improvement and personal skill, by being supportive of team mates, and by
enjoying the company of friends.
- “I’m being pushed in sport”. Children like to make their own choices. Let
them decide what is best for them and what sport they should play. Talk to
them about commitment to any decision they make, not the decisions you make!
- “Mum and Dad don’t play with me”. Play games in the backyard with your
children. Beat them sometimes (if you can!) and lose to them sometimes. Let
them make up the rules. Enjoy the relationship you develop with them through
sport!
- “Why should I play anyway?” Teach your children that sport is fun,
challenging and healthy. It’s a great way to make friends.
Sport Waikato is in a position to give you advice and support about being a
great sporting parent. Take the opportunity of contacting us if you need
some assistance. Visit our new website:
