Dear Parents / Caregivers

Our thoughts this week are with the Strathmore School Community following the tragic death of Lois Dear.

Welcome back to school for the third term.  A special welcome to our new students.

Last term we announced the term dates for 2007.  The Ministry of Education has listened to the concerns of various groups and made changes to the dates for next year.

The amended dates are:
Term 1 – Wednesday, 7 February to Thursday, 5 April
Term 2 – Monday, 23 April to Friday, 29 June
Term 3 – Monday, 16 July to Friday, 21 September
Term 4 – Monday, 8 October to Thursday, 20 December.

Our apologies to any families that this causes confusion to or inconvenience, however, these changes are outside of our control.

Open Door Policy

We welcome parents to make contact with teachers if they have any concerns, or just to find out how their children are progressing.  Teachers are unable to meet with parents during class teaching time for obvious reasons.  Before school and after school there are sometimes staff meetings when teachers are also not available.  To avoid coming up to school when teachers are not available, it is important to make contact with the office or teacher first.  Please remember when coming on site that all visitors must report to the office.

The mid year reports that were not given out at parent interviews were mailed to parents at the end of last term.  If parents would like to meet with teachers to discuss the reports please make an appointment.

Homework Research Website

School students can get help with their homework research from New Zealand’s own award winning online service, AnyQuestions.co.nz.  The service is free of charge and runs between 1:00p.m. and 6:00p.m. each weekday and 2:00p.m. and 3:00p.m. each weekday in te reo Maori.

Online librarians use a combination of one-to-one dialogue and co-browsing, to help students unpack their question and take them to useful, safe sites on the internet.  AnyQuestions.co.nz is safe and convenient.  It can be accessed from an internet pc anywhere.  All of the online  librarians have been vetted by the NZ Police and all session transcripts are monitored.

There’s also an FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) database with great website suggestions for the hottest topics for help outside of service hours.  So, if the children in your household need help with their research, check out www.anyquestions.co.nz  or www.uiangapatai.co.nz

Operetta
This year’s production is called the Dracula Rock Show.  It is written by Malcolm Sircom who also wrote our hugely successful production in 2004 “The Rocky Monster Show”.

It tells the story of vampires and zombies who meet up with criminals and police at a Night Club where the dastardly deed takes place.

There are approximately ninety students involved with roles such as main characters, extras, choir, dances, back stage or technical.  The production will be staged on the 18th, 19th and 20th September with performances beginning at 7:30p.m.  Cast, choir and dances started rehearsing last term and the show promises to be very entertaining.
