Dear Parents / Caregivers
PARENT INTERVIEWS AND REPORT AFTERNOON /
EVENINGS - Monday, 26 June and Tuesday, 27 June
Mid year Parent Interview and Report evenings are next Monday and Tuesday in
the school hall.
All students have been given Parent Interview newsletters to take home to
enable parents to arrange interview times. If your child has not
brought one home, please ask for it or arrange to get another one from
school.
Interview times are arranged on a first in, first time basis. Students
will bring home slips which indicate the date and time of interview.
A reminder that parents cannot turn up without a confirmed interview
time. Teachers usually have all of their available time slots
filled. If you are unable to attend interviews on Monday or Tuesday
and you wish to have an interview at an alternative time, contact your
child’s class teacher. Parents are reminded to arrive 15 minutes prior
to their appointment time, collect their report and read before the
interview commences.
As interviews start at 3:00p.m., school will finish at 2:30p.m.
on Monday, 26 June and Tuesday, 27 June to enable teachers to make the
necessary preparations for the interviews. Reports will be mailed out
later next week to parents who do not attend interviews.
Attached to today’s newsletter is a sample blank report and an explanation
of the system we use to assess the students. If you would like the
report assessment system we are using further explained or clarified you can
either make an appointment with me prior to the parent interview evening or
see me, if I am free, on 26 or 27 June when you come up for your interview.

Numeracy Workshop
Once again staff will be involved in Professional Development and school
will finish early. Children will be released from school at 2:00p.m.
on Wednesday, 28 June. These workshops that require an early finish
are a very small part of the time staff put into Professional Development.
Bus children will be supervised if you are unable to collect them.
Thank you for your co-operation with this.

Intermediate Schools' Netball Competition
Tokoroa Intermediate hosted the Waikato Intermediate
Schools Netball Competition last Thursday, 15 June. It was a
successful day without the hindrance of frost and rain.
Both our Year 7A and Year 8A teams played well and were great ambassadors
for the school. Congratulations to the Year 8A team who made it into
the finals and came Runners Up in the Year 8 grade. Thanks to all the
coaches, managers, parents and staff who made it such a successful day.

School Social
A reminder that our first school Social of the year is Thursday, 22 June.
Students must have an invitation which is signed by a parent before they are
allowed in.
Several Important Reminders
- Invitation permission slips must be presented at the door, signed by a
parent / guardian.
- Pupils will need to be brought to and collected from the hall. This is a
condition of attending the Social. Students are not to arrange to meet
parents in Elizabeth Drive, Billah Street or the Matarawa Bus Bay. This is
for safety reasons.
- The Elizabeth Drive gate will be open before the Social and again at the
end of the Social.
- A tidy standard of dress is required.
- No hats, bandanas or beanies.
- Bags are discouraged.
- The Tuck Shop is open but large amounts of money are not to be brought.
- Security will be in attendance to support the staff.
- No pupils may leave the hall until dismissed by the teacher-in-charge.

Wise Use of Antibiotics Campaign
PHARMAC have provided us with a brochure on “Wise Use of
Antibiotics” including information on colds, flu and bacterial infections,
what to do if you catch a bug, when to see a Doctor and meningitis symptoms.
This brochure is available from the school office if you would like one.
The following is some of the information from this brochure:
How can I avoid catching bugs?
Cold and flu viruses are spread by transferring droplets of fluid from your
nose or mouth. You may prevent this by:
• Keeping hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth
• Not sharing cups or cutlery
• Using paper tissues to blow your nose and throwing them away after use
• Washing hands with plenty of soap and water for 20 seconds and dry
thoroughly
• If you use your hands to cover a sneeze, always wash them afterwards
• Making your home a smoke-free zone as smoke can irritate the nose and
lungs and may increase a child’s susceptibility to a cold.
What if I catch a bug?
There are no instant cures for viral colds and flu but some of the following
suggestions may make you feel more comfortable.
REST
A warm comfortable environment will help your immune system fight off the
viruses that cause colds and flu. Take a day or two off school if you need
it.
FLUIDS
Drink plenty of fluids (e.g. water, diluted fruit juice) to prevent the
membranes in your nose and throat drying out and to replace fluids lost from
your body.
REGULAR PARACETAMOL
Take every 4 to 6 hours for up to 3 days or as directed to reduce fever and
relieve aches and pains. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about the most
appropriate medicine and dose. Children should not be given aspirin-based
products.
SEE A DOCTOR IF YOUR CHILD:
• Is not improving
• Is very irritable, grizzly or sleepy
• Breathes very fast
• Refuses food or drinks
• Has a fever
• Has sore ears
• Coughs a lot
• Has a sore throat
If you are worried about how sick your child is at any time don’t
hesitate to see a doctor. If you have other medical problems you should see
a doctor earlier.
CONTACT THE DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY IF YOU OR YOUR CHILD DEVELOP ANY OF THESE
MENINGITIS DANGER SYMPTOMS:
• Severe headache or neck pain
• Eyes intolerant to light
• Drowsy, floppy, is less alert or difficult to wake
• Skin rash
• High fever
• Vomiting
• Unusual or high-pitched cry
