Dear Parents / Caregivers

The school is settling into the routines of the 2006 year and it is timely to seek your help on a very important issue. Cycle Safety; many of our students ride bikes to and from school every day and as you are aware this places them at risk. We require all students to abide by the road rules on the way to and from school. Cycle and road rules generally are put in place for safety reasons. Please ensure your child knows the road rules and support us by ensuring they do follow them.

Remember bikes are very hard to see and cyclists need to be extra careful.
Some basics that you could cover –

REMEMBER:

  • ‘STOP’ and ‘GIVE WAY’ signs.
  • Ride no more than two abreast, single file in narrow or busy areas.
  • Extra dangers of fog and rain, be visible.
  • Safety helmets on and correctly done up.
  • Riding on the footpath.
  • Following distances.
  • Doubling.
  • Going too fast, unable to stop in half visible distance.
  • Passing cars at intersections, beware of the car turning left.
  • The dangers of our Elizabeth Drive entrance where is the safest place to cross.
Thank you for your support with this.

Parents of children who walk to school might also like to cover similar safety points.

How Can You Help Your Child Succeed At School?

Parents often ask teachers how they can help their child to do well at school.  I believe all parents want the best for their children and for them to succeed at school.  Many of the ways parents can help are very simple.  I have compiled a list from several articles, which identify common elements found in students who achieve at school.
  • They have healthy breakfasts and lunches.
  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Go to bed between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
  • Attend school regularly.
  • Clothes are washed regularly.
  • Parents/guardians attend School Report and Parent Evenings.
  • They visit doctors as required (early intervention).
  • Homework is completed.
  • There are books in the home.
  • Parents know where their children are after school and especially after dark.
  • Parents spend time with their children and support their activities and sports.
  • Parents encourage their children’s success at school.
  • Parents have realistic aspirations and expectations for their children’s success at school, on sports field, etc.
  • Parents support the school and their child’s teacher.
If the first three points identified don’t occur, there is a strong likelihood that your child is going to struggle to learn no matter how good the class programme and teacher is.  If you can put a tick next to all thirteen points, there is a very good chance your child will succeed.

Thank you to parents who are calling into the office when visiting the school.  We appreciate your efforts.  As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, this is to ensure student safety.

Change of Address and/or Phone Number

It is important that we have our student records up to date, especially phone numbers and emergency phone numbers in case of sickness or injury.  During the year if you change your address or phone number, please let us know by either phoning the school office or giving your child a note to bring to school.

Te Reo Maori

If you wish your child to learn Te Reo Maori on a Friday morning and haven’t returned the form, we require notification by next week as this is when lessons start.  Forms are available from the office if you have lost the one brought home or didn’t get one.  Ask your child to collect one and bring it home.
