Dear Parents / Caregivers

Today’s newsletter has the Term 1 Calendar of school events attached to it.

I have been very impressed with the way most students have settled into school, especially students who are attending for the first time.

During the first six weeks of the year, students sit a number of tests.  These help teachers identify not only the students’ levels, but also helps them plan programmes to cater for their learning needs.  Some of the tests are part of the Ministry’s Planning and Reporting requirements.  Our school has set targets in English and Maths and by testing all students during the year, will be able to determine whether we meet our targets.  There will be further information for parents on targets during the year.

BULLYING

We are endeavouring to reduce and if possible, eliminate bullying.  We want students to feel safe and enjoy school.  We will speak to all students about bullying at our assembly and will continue to re-visit it on a regular basis.  If your child is being bullied, he/she needs to let the class teacher know so appropriate action can be taken.  Students have been told this.  If you find your child is being bullied and has not reported it, please let either me, Brian Fisher or Jan Stobie (Deputy Principals) or me know about it.

ENROLMENT FORMS

As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, Year 7 and new students will bring home an enrolment form to be filled in.  Although some parents filled the form in last year, we need to make sure our records are up to date in case of emergencies.

For students who identify as Maori, their iwi is also required.  An information sheet from the Ministry of Education explaining this has been supplied.

We appreciate parents’ support in filling in the forms and returning them to school.  We realise this is an inconvenience and will re-look at the system for 2007.

JEWELLERY, HAIR, UNIFORM

The school Board has made the following statements:

Jewellery – “The only jewellery that can be worn to school is a watch, signet ring, taonga and, children with pierced ears, a maximum of two studs.  With taonga they must be worn inside school uniforms”.

Hair – “Schools are not the venue for showing off the latest fashion and from time to time the Board of Trustees will advise parents of fashion which is not acceptable.  Hair must be the students natural colour and not have accessories which are a safety concern or make a fashion statement in it”.

Mrs Stobie and Mr Fisher (our Deputy Principals) will be starting checks shortly.  Please assist us by ensuring these rules are adhered to.

Unless there are special circumstances all students must follow the uniform policy.  If special circumstances do exist please contact the Principal, Mr Straw, or the Deputy Principals, Mrs Stobie for Year 8 students or Mr Fisher for Year 7 students, to discuss the matter.  We would appreciate your co-operation.

UNIFORMS

We have a shortage of second hand uniforms and would appreciate any donations or some to sell on ‘behalf of’.  Uniforms to be purchased are available on Thursday afternoons.

STUDENT ABSENCES

If your child is away from school, we would appreciate a phone call as we carry out absence checks every day and use the services of Tokoroa Truancy Service.  Our school is working with the Ministry of Education on an initiative to reduce absenteeism.  There will be further details of this in future newsletters.

WAIKATO DISTRICT HEALTH BOARD

Year Seven Immunisation Programme for Tokoroa Intermediate School

The Year 7 Immunisation Programme is currently being planned for your child’s school.  It is also being offered to Year 8 students as Public Health Nurses were unable to offer the Year 7 immunisation in schools in 2005 because of the Meningococcal Programme.

Information will be given about the Year 7 Immunisation Programme, which may include viewing the Ministry of Health Video “Year Seven Immunisations” specifically designed for this age group.

At this information session your child will be given a consent form to bring home for you to choose whether or not to have your child immunised by Public Health Nurses at your child’s school.

There is information about the Year Seven immunisations on the Immunisation Consent form.
