Dear Parents / Caregivers

Tokoroa Truancy Initiative

The initiative to improve attendance in all Tokoroa schools is underway.  There has been information in our newsletters and in last weeks South Waikato News.  Some parents will have already received a letter pointing out the need to contact us if your child is away from school.  The school is keeping a record of all letters mailed out to parents.  Well over half of our students have very good or excellent attendance.  It is students who have unsatisfactory attendance that we are focussing on.  As the local paper pointed out, Tokoroa has some of the worst truancy rates per population in New Zealand.

University of NSW Science Competition

Eight of our students sat the University of NSW Science test earlier in the year.  We had one distinction (90-98 percentile) and one credit (69-89 percentile).  Achievement Awards are for the top results gained by students at our school which do not gain a distinction or credit award (national results).  Congratulations to all students who entered and in particular Chelsea Alley (distinction), Robert Dickinson (credit) and Jake Belfield and Jordan Redwood (achievement).  Over 420,000 students from New Zealand, Australia and parts of the Pacific and Asia participated.  In most cases the more able students are the only ones that sit the test.

Sexual Development Education

In 2002 and again at the end of 2004, our school consulted with all parents on the delivery of “Sexual Development Education” which is a part of Sexuality Education.  The Board developed a programme, which we have used for two years with minor refinements, mainly organisational ones and delivery of content.

The programme, which will begin on 29 August will be delivered by Raukawa Trust Board, Pacific Family Education and Community Health (Public Health Nurses).  Parents will be able to choose which of these organisations will provide the programme for their children.  All providers have clear guidelines on what they are to cover.  The different providers are able to place their cultural slant on the lessons but must adhere to the content agreed to.  Parents have the right to withdraw their children from the Sexual Development Programme.  This must be in writing to the school.

Further organisational details and the content of the course will be in next week’s newsletter.  Parents may attend Sexual Development lesson sessions to hear what the providers have to say to enable parents to discuss issues with their children.  To plan for the Sexual Development Education Programme we require the number of students who will be working with each provider.

Relief Cleaner - Vacancy

Our school has a vacant position for a relief cleaner.  We have six cleaners and from time to time we need a relief cleaner to cover sickness, etc.  Work would involve cleaning classrooms from 3:10pm - 5:50pm approximately.  This position may lead onto permanent work as and when a vacancy occurs.  Please phone Brian Fisher (Deputy Principal), if interested.
