Dear Parents / Caregivers

With the change to winter uniform which needs to be made by next Monday, it is important that all parts of the school uniform are named.  This is particularly important with items of clothing students are likely to take off during the day, e.g. tracksuit tops, shoes and socks, etc.  With shoes it is advisable that they are named on the underside of the tongue.

Squash

Four of our students, Ben Nicholson, Jake Belfield, Anneke Duyvestyn and Alaya Turia, represented our school at the Waikato Intermediate School Squash tournament held at Matamata last Tuesday.  The team was placed fourth with both Ben and Jake winning four games and only losing one.  Thank you to Nikki Belfield who transported the team and managed them during the day.

Pennants Golf

Three of our students are members of the Tokoroa Golf Club, Junior Pennants team, which was runner up to Ngahinepouri.  After five rounds of match play they played Paeroa / Thames in the semi finals and Ngahinepouri in the finals.  Congratulations to the team and in particular to Chantelle Cassidy, Kelly Nicholas and Ellistar Pihama from our school.

Soccer

Two teams were entered into the Waikato inter Intermediate Schools’ competition and they travelled to Jansen Park in Hamilton yesterday.  Although there were no final placings for either the boys or the girls teams all players had to work very hard against extremely strong competition.  Laura Thompson and Rose Daniels each scored well and were backed up by good midfield action.  The two teams were an absolute delight to take out for the day.  Their behaviour and sportsmanship were exemplary.  They were excellent ambassadors for both Tokoroa Intermediate School and Tokoroa.

Attendance

The Ministry of Education are concerned at the high truancy levels in Tokoroa Schools.  This is one of the reasons for lower student achievement levels in certain regions.  Condoned truancy is one of the major concerns.  “Condoned truancy” is when parents allow their children to stay home and make excuses for their absence.  This usually leads to students not reaching their potential at school and will often adversely affect them for the rest of their lives.  Unless your child is sick or there is a family bereavement it is important they attend school.
