Dear Parents / Caregivers

Education Review Office (ERO) Review

A team of five review officers from ERO will be in our school next week carrying out a review of our school.  This is a part of the regular review cycle.

Our last review took place in 2001.  During the review they will be meeting with the Board, staff, some parent groups and students.  They will also be visiting classrooms to look at programmes in action.

If you visit the school next week they may wish to talk to you.  All Education Review Officers will have an ERO name badge to identify themselves.

Reading Tutors

Our Reading Tutor Programme started yesterday.  We have fifteen volunteer Reading Tutors working with students who need reading mileage.  The Reading Tutors come into the school in the mornings for blocks of approximately 1½ hours and during this time they work with four students on a 1:1 basis, listening to them read and discussing what they have read.  Some of the Reading Tutors come in on more than one day and for more than one session, e.g. one of the tutors spend 7½ hours in our school a week.

There are one hundred and twenty children provided with extra reading through the Reading Tutor Programme.  We have found that the work the students do with the Reading Tutors, not only has a positive effect on their reading, but flows onto written and oral language skills and attitude to learning and school in general.

Thank you to this year’s Reading Tutors – Kori Tihema, Anna Boseley, Charlie Clark, Janice Mair, Maree Ashton, Shirley Thomas, Lesley DeLisle, Rita McCullough, Alice Lee, Rose Marjoribanks, Jo Gerrard, Di Bell and Juanita Belfield.

Waikato Intermediate Schools' Touch Competition

On Tuesday 8th March two teams from Tokoroa Intermediate School travelled to Swarbrick Park in Hamilton to compete in the Waikato Intermediate School Touch Tournament.

The teams were:
Boys – Taylor Glassie (Captain), Kale Pomare, John Wilson, Jared Wilson, Daniel Dobbyn, Joseph Metu, Ryan Khan, Graham Sheck, Siulepa Metonga, Joshua Fa’agalu, Kamryn Brown.

Girls – Chelsea Alley (Captain), Chloe Pomare, Kelly Nicholas, Morgan Pourau, Daina McClure, Nelly Tuputala, Rose Daniel, Sissy Maniapoto, Rangimarie Hunia, Jessica Ria, Cheyenne Wilson, Halena Anderson-Pitman.

The teams showed excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament and competed strongly in all their matches.

The girls played well, losing to the eventual winner, Maeroa Intermediate in the semi-final.

The boys played extremely well to reach the final, after playing nine games they lost to Maeroa Intermediate 3-2 in the final.

Both teams can feel very proud of their achievement. Many thanks to Dean Ria for taking the girls team at last minute notice, Dutch Wilson for being our energetic referee and to the parents who came to support their children.

Tracksuits

With the cooler mornings, some students will be considering purchasing tracksuits.  The school tracksuits cost $115.00 and can only be purchased from school.  They can be purchased separately, jacket - $75.00 and pants - $40.00.  As we sometimes run out of particular sizes, it is important that parents order them early.  Please don’t wait until next Term; we are only able to get them made in bulk lots.  Please look at having your child measured for them well before they need to wear them.

Milo Cup Cricket

The team has played another two games, winning both and improving in confidence with each outing.

Results: Mangakino 76 off 35 overs and Tokoroa 77 off 29 overs.  Pick of the bowlers was Stephen Harris with 4 wickets for 9 runs off 6 overs.  Bats people to shine were Jake Belfield with 13 runs, Robert Dickinson with 10 runs and Jason Boyce with a hard hit 9.

St. Mary’s 77 off 35 overs and Tokoroa 176 off 35 overs.  Tokoroa reached the target in 8 overs but to give everyone a chance to bat it was agreed to carry on.  Stephen Harris with 52 not out and Abel Brown with 30 not out lead the batting and Thomas Duncan 25 and Hazel Brown with a well hit 20.  Thanks to all parents who have helped with transport and to Cathy MacPherson for her help at school and on match days.

Cricket

Yesterday the schools cricket team travelled to Hamilton to play 3 x 15 over games in the Waikato Intermediate Schools Competition.

The first game was against Maeroa who after some excellent bowling and catching by our team, were all out for 98.  We then scored 100 to win the game by 6 wickets.  The next game was against St. Andrews who batted first and scored 82 runs in their 15 overs.  We won the match with 4 overs in hand.  The last game was against Fairfield, an extremely well drilled team, which has 4 Waikato under 14 reps in its ranks.  Again some excellent bowling and catching kept their batting to 126 while we managed 70 off our 15 overs.  All in all some excellent play by our team and as the competition was run at two venues there is no overall winner.

Many thanks to Mr Pourau, Mr Harris, Mrs Brown and Mrs Matangi for their assistance with umpiring, scoring and general support.
